I finished this book a few days ago. I had high expectations ever since I thoroughly enjoyed On Beauty, the first I read of Smith.  This didn’t live up to my hopes, but it was a good book nonetheless.  Check it out.
Now I’m reading the second of Moritz Thomsen, Farm on the River of Emeralds, and so far, it’s amazing. I’ve been reading like a madman recently, taking advantage of my time after work.  However, I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to keep it up with the stacks of essays and projects mating like rabbits in my “to do” folder.  It’s not looking good…

“Of course, it’s not enough for us to increase student aid.  We can’t just keep subsidizing skyrocketing tuition; we’ll run out of money.  States also need to do their part, by making higher education a higher priority in their budgets.  And colleges and universities have to do their part by working to keep costs down.  Recently, I spoke with a group of college presidents who’ve done just that.  Some schools re-design courses to help students finish more quickly.  Some use better technology.  The point is, it’s possible.  So let me put colleges and universities on notice:  If you can’t stop tuition from going up, the funding you get from taxpayers will go down.
Higher education can’t be a luxury – it’s an economic imperative that every family in America should be able to afford.” - President Obama

Amen!

even in friendly conversation
I get the bell hooks-ian urge
to kill mother-fuckers who say stupid shit to me
all day
bitter branches of things I cannot say out loud
sprout deviant from my neck

fuck you-you-fucking-racist-sexist-turd
fuck you for wanting to talk about homophobia
while you exploit the desperation of undocumented immigrants
to clean your hallways
bathe your children and cook your dinner
for less than you and I spend on our tax deductible lunch!

I want to scream
all oppression is connected you dick!

In a sence… there’s a sickness in my chest

if you think that life’s a bitch you should give her some respect
maybe she’s a genophobe, a victim of neglect and
the impotence you have is just a symptom of the stress

The first b-day present I received yesterday was from a student, a 15 dollar i tunes gift certificate.  So, Ana Tijoux’s 1977 album for 5.99 was a MUST!
