Incredible interview with James Baldwin.  Quite telling of our history, and it’s disturbing.

“It’s one of the great problems of being an American Negro in the first place.  You are taught, really, the entire weight of the republic, teaches you to despise yourself. When you open your eyes in the world and look out at it, there is nothing reflecting you.”

“I think white Americans consider themselves something else.  They seem to assume that I live in a segregated society. And they don’t realize that they live in a segregated society, that we do.  And that the white child, is really just as victimized by this peculiar midieval system as a negro child. And what’s worse with the white child is the white child doesn’t know it! And his whole attitude toward the world and toward reality…”
